COURSE DESCRIPTION

This laboratory course focuses on the reasoning process through the taking and analysis of present and past health histories, physical findings, and diagnostic studies that contribute to the formulation of accurate diagnosis and differential diagnosis most encountered in primary care. This course will also place emphasis on effective communication, health promotion, and disease prevention, screening of adult and older populations, and providing culturally competent care. Professional, ethical, and legal issues are addressed along with preparing the family nurse practitioner on how to appropriately diagnose and manage common health issues in adult and geriatric population.

COURSE STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

After completing this course, the student should be able to:

1.     Compare and examine the consequences of unethical behaviors in academia and practice (EOPSLO# 6).

2.     Preparing and presenting evidence of necessary clinical rotation requirements (EOPSLO# 1).

3.     Demonstrate effective communication skills by performing culturally sensitive health assessment interviews (EOPSLO# 1 and 5).

4.     Apply knowledge to differentiate subjective and objective information to construct an accurate and thorough past medical history (PMH), history of present illness (HPI) and physical examination (PE) (EOPSLO# 1).

5.     Formulate accurate differential diagnoses to promote health, prevent disease, and manage acute and chronic illness in adult and geriatric population (EOPSLO# 3 and 4).

6.     Employs screening and diagnostic strategies in the development of diagnoses (EOPSLO# 8).

7.     Critically analyze data and evidence for improving health outcomes (EOPSLO# 3, 4, and 9).
